About Lee Greif
Lee Greif recently spent 10 days in China investigating business and investment opportunities. During his visit he visited in Beijing and Shanghai. He concentrated on potential long term investments in Real Estate and Healthcare.
While the country is buzzing with tremendous pre-Olympic activity, there are clearly many business opportunities that will outlast the Olympics. It is clear that there has been major loosening up of economic freedoms in the cities since the cultural revolution of 1991. There is still great poverty in the rural areas, but a large labor force that is anxious to migrate to the cities for work.
There is no question that the focus of much of the populous has shifted from politics to business. As Greif said in a recent interview with the Chronicle,"The people seem almost too preoccupied with doing business to worry about politics".
While there is no doubt that there are still Human rights violations, and some restriction on freedom of speech, it is also clear that the country has started a long journey to significant economic progress. This journey toward prosperity will inevitable lead to more travel, worldwide communications and trade, all of which will require greater political freedom.
While the political leadership of the country appears to be in the hands of the older generation, the business community seems to be full of young energetic entrepaneurs. Many of whom started their businesses after the 1991 cultural revolution and loosening up by the government.
The Chinese have now seen 17 years of 9% compounded economic growth in their economy. Greif reports that many of the business people he talked with during his visit were very supportive of their government. The said that they have never enjoyed as much prosperity
